From 21 September 2017 to 21 January 2018 Palazzo Strozzi hosts the Cinquecento in Florence, an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to the art of the second sixteenth century in Florence; the period in which the Villa that hosts the Torre dei Lari was already a wonderful noble residence.
The exhibition combines works of artists such as Michelangelo, Andrea del Sarto, Rosso Fiorentino, Pontormo, Bronzino, Giorgio Vasari, Santi di Tito and Giambologna. Last act of a trilogy of exhibitions at Palazzo Strozzi by Carlo Falciani and Antonio Natali, started with Bronzino in 2010 and Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino in 2014, the festival celebrates an exceptional cultural and intellectual epoch, the second half of the sixteenth century in Florence, in a tight confrontation between “modern fashion” and contrast, between sacred and profane: a unique season for the history of art in Florence, marked by the Council of Trent and the figure of Francis I de ‘Medici, one of the most genial representatives of court patronage in Europe.
The exhibition includes over seventy paintings and sculptures, an expression of the cultural temperament of that time. Along the halls of Palazzo Strozzi, they will be able to converse, in a chronological and thematic course at the same time, sacred and profane works of the great masters of the century such as Michelangelo, Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino, but also painters such as Giorgio Vasari, Jacopo Zucchi, Giovanni Stradano, Girolamo Macchietti, Mirabello Cavalieri and Santi di Tito and sculptors like Giambologna, Bartolomeo Ammannati and Vincenzo Danti, only to name some of those who were involved in the firms of the Studiolo, the Tribune and the decoration of the Florentine churches according to the conciliar directions. Artists able to play on more expressive media by mediating their training on the great master of the beginning of the century, with the instances of a world that faced a complex change towards the age of Galileo Galilei, open to a new vision of the nature of both the artistic expression of European breath.
